Remote Learning Plan
In the event that a remote learning day is called, students will participate in asynchronous instruction. Asynchronous instruction means that students will complete lessons and assignments on their own schedule, rather than in real-time with a teacher. While there will be no live class sessions, all assignments and materials will be provided, and students are expected to work independently to complete the tasks for the day.
If you experience any connectivity issues or difficulties with completing the work, please remember that according to CCS School Board Policy, students have up to five (5) days to submit their assignments upon returning to school. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility with remote learning.
Specific instructions for your school's remote learning plan are as follows:
2025 - 2026 HWMS Inclement Weather Plan Information for Students & Families
This will be used in the event CCS closes school due to inclement/severe weather and chooses to operate in a remote instruction setting.
Inclement/Severe Weather Occurs...What’s next?
Step 1) CCS will notify families if school will be modified due to inclement weather.
Step 2) CCS will announce if schools are closed or will operate remotely. (Phone call, Parent Square message, school webpage, social media, etc)
Step 3) If schools will operate remotely, HWMS’ plan will be posted on the HWMS website for students and parents.
Step 4) On Remote Learning Days, students will complete 3 items from their Inclement Weather Choice Board for each Remote Learning Day. (e.g., 2 Remote Learning Days = 6 Activities) These assignments must be turned in to their Homeroom teacher upon return to school for students to be counted as present for the Remote Learning Day.
Step 5) Any questions/concerns, please email or ParentSquare message the child’s Homeroom teacher.
Inclement Weather Choice Board
Pick three (3) activities from the choice board below. Complete all three activities carefully and follow the instructions under the board for each one. When you are finished, show your work to your homeroom teacher so they can check it off for your attendance.
Finished early? You may complete more activities for fun!

Choice Board Directions
1. Character Swap Write-Up
Choose a book you’re reading (or have read). Write a short scene where two characters swap roles. Explain how the story would change and why.
2. Found Poetry
Find 10–15 words from around your house (magazines, labels, books, newspapers) and arrange them into a poem. Illustrate or color the final version.
3. Real-Life Ratio Challenge
Choose a recipe, model kit, or board game. Identify 3 ratios or proportions that appear in the instructions (ex: ingredient amounts, distance on a map, scoring). Show how they relate.
4. Geometry Scavenger Hunt
Find and sketch five items in your home that match geometric terms (parallel lines, acute angles, right triangles, polygons, etc.). Label each drawing.
5. Weather Observation Log
Spend 15 minutes observing the weather outside (snow, rain, wind, temperature changes).
Record:
- What you notice
- A question you have
- A prediction for the next 12 hours
6. Mini Density Test
Fill a cup with water. Drop in 5 small objects (coin, grape, paperclip, pasta, pencil shaving). Sort them into “floats” and “sinks.” Explain why you think each did what it did.
7. Family Timeline
Interview someone at home (or list your own history) and create a timeline with 10 major events from their life. Add one historical event that overlaps their timeline.
8. Map Your Home
Draw a map of your home or room. Include a compass rose, scale (your choice!), labels, and a key.
9. Winter Mood Sketch
Sketch or paint how today’s weather feels. You can use shapes, lines, colors, or textures—no requirement for realism.
10. Book Cover Redesign
Choose a book you’ve read and redesign the cover to match its theme. Include:
- Title
- Author
- Symbolism in the artwork
11. 3-Round Movement Circuit
Create a mini circuit you can do indoors. Choose 5 moves (ex: jumping jacks, wall sit, toe touches, arm circles, quick steps, planks). Do each for 30 seconds, rest 20 seconds. Repeat for 3 rounds.
12. Practice Your Instrument
Practice your instrument for 10–15 minutes, then write:
- What piece or scale you played
- One thing that improved
- One goal for next time
13. Indoor Mindfulness Walk
Take a slow “mindfulness walk” around your home. Focus on:
- 3 things you can see
- 3 things you can hear
- 2 things you can feel
- 1 calming breath pattern
Then write 5–6 sentences about how your body or mood changed before vs. after.
14. Gratitude Scavenger Hunt
Find 5 items around your home that represent something you’re grateful for. For each item, write 1–2 sentences explaining:
- Why you chose it and how it brings you comfort, joy, or peace.
